Afri-Pads: About Us: FAQs
Each Afri-Pads menstrual kit is guaranteed to last 1 year, or 12 menstrual cycles.
To place an order for Afri-Pads, please use the information detailed above to contact an Afri-Pads representative.
Every girl/woman’s menstrual cycle and flow is unique. Five absorbing pad-liners in two convenient shapes (3 with wings and 2 without wings) are sufficient for a woman with typical flow. These 5 pad-liners are meant to be worn, washed, and re-worn as necessary over the course of the menstrual cycle. According to her specific needs, each woman can choose to wear any combination of 1 to 3 pad-liners at at time for enhanced protection and comfort. For women who experience a heavier flow, additional pad-liners are available for purchase separately.
Pad-liners should be washed properly whenever soiled. We recommend soaking soiled pad-liners for 3-4 hours in cold, soapy water. Then wash as normal. Allow 12-hours for the pad-liner to dry completely. At the end of each menstrual cycle, the outer pad should also be washed.
Our aim is to sell a product that is simultaneously effective and affordable. We keep our pricing low to make Afri-Pads an affordable menstrual option for the greatest number of girls/women possible.
Each Afri-Pads menstrual kit is a reusable/washable menstrual product designed for use in areas where water is accessible and plentiful.
To maintain proper health and hygiene, pad-liners must be washed whenever soiled. This means that each of the 5 pad-liners will likely need to be washed several times during each menstrual cycle.
Consequently, Afri-Pads menstrual kits are NOT a viable option in areas where water is scarce and regular washing is an impossibility.

Reusable/washable sanitary pads provide a good alternative to provisional menstrual products including but not limited to: rags, toilet paper, newspaper, leaves/mud. Carefully designed, reusable sanitary napkins like Afri-Pads are a considerable improvement to these provisional products, providing superior protection and comfort.
However, Afri-Pads does recognize that reusable menstrual pads have certain limitations. For example, the “intimacy” of menstruation results in most girls/women choosing not to hang their pad-liners to dry outside, where they would be exposed to fresh air and sunlight. Instead they choose to dry their pad-liners in discrete places (i.e. under the bed, in a corner, etc.). However, drying pad-liners in these dark, damp places does increase the possibility of bacterial infections. Additionally, as discussed in FAQ #7, reusable sanitary pads are NOT a viable option in water-scarce regions.
This is why Afri-Pads focuses on sending a female health educator (“Senga”) into schools to sensitize girls about proper care of their Afri-Pads and the importance of personal hygiene during menstruation.
Ultimately, in spite of certain limitations, Afri-Pads menstrual kits are a great alternative and considerable improvement to the vast majority of provisional menstrual products currently being used by women and girls across rural Uganda.
